KNOXVILLE, Tenn — A 90-year-old former hospital in Knoxville could find new life as supportive housing for people in need. Serene Manor, which now sits empty, holds special meaning for Knoxville's black community. It's where they could access health care. The City of Knoxville owns it, and leaders are explaining those plans to transform it into new housing.
When it closed in 2024, Serene Manor was a private nursing home. That's also the year the City bought the building north of downtown. They want to use it to provide housing and support for the homeless population.
Serene Manor has served as a care facility since 1933. When it opened, it was known as the Rosenwald Wing of Knoxville General Hospital.
