HIGH POINT, N.C. — As temperatures dropped below freezing, the multiple cities in the Triad issued a White Flag Activation — an emergency response that opens additional shelter space for people who would otherwise be left outside in dangerous cold.
One of those shelters is in the City of High Point.
West End Ministries is expanding its capacity to make sure no one is turned away. Carolyn Jones the Winter Shelter Manager says, "we allow access to other beds and cots from Leslie's House to the winter shelter. That’ll give us additional room even if we reach our capacity.”
While some shoppers are buying gloves, sleds, and ice melt to prepare for tomorrow’s storm, others are simply searching for a safe place to escape it. During White Flag Activation nights, unhoused single women in High
