CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -The tradition of lighting a Christmas tree at the Capitol has a new meaning this year. Governor Patrick Morrisey said the tree will honor two National Guard members shot in D.C.

Morrisey said, “Tonight we lift up both of their families, their friends and the fellow guardsmen who stand strong behind them.”

West Virginia National Guard members filled the crowd at the ceremony enjoying music from Capital High School and live performances from the River City Youth Ballet.

Annabel Neil said this was her first time at the ceremony, and she’s there to support her brother in the National Guard.
