WAYLAND, Ky. (WSAZ) - Driving through Wayland, KY, you’ll likely pass a statue of Kentucky high school basketball legend Kelly Colman. The building behind the statue is a place of fun and harsh times.
“So I look at the gym around me, I think about the flooding we’ve experienced here since 2022 and July of ‘22,” Mayor Jerry Fultz said. “We had a thousand year flood, this gym was filled. Five weeks following the July flooding, this was the center of help for people in this area. Wayland doesn’t have but about 400 people population, but we were serving, we were feeding six to 800 people everyday.”
After seeing how important the gym became for helping out in times of need, they went to work to help make the area a well equipped building for disaster relief.
