SUPERIOR — Ryan Pettingill peeled off his helmet and collapsed in exhaustion and disappointment as the horn sounded.

Northern Lakes’ Waylon Katterhagen had just flipped a shot past Pettingill 90 seconds into overtime to secure the Lightning’s 2-1 win over the Spartans. Pettingill saved 34 of 36 shots, but his heroics weren’t quite enough.

“There is nothing more we could have asked from him,” said senior captain Cameron LaPorte. “He was standing on his head back there. We just couldn’t pull through for him, and it breaks my heart that we didn’t.”
