HERBERT AND KIRK NAMED MAYOR AND VICE MAYOR

The new Chico City Council got off to a unified start Tuesday night, unanimously electing Dan Herbert mayor and Maureen Kirk vice mayor just minutes after four council members were sworn into office.

Both decisions got mostly standing ovations from the packed Council Chambers audience, as did the swearing in of the new council members, performed by retiring Judge Ann Rutherford.

Herbert said being mayor of the city he’d called home all his adult life wasn’t something he’d even dreamed of.

“Wow,” he said immediately after being the only one nominated for the job. He added that he thought he’d serve out his term as “some obscure council member,” instead
