Winnipeg has no shortage of real problems. Crime continues to rise. Businesses are still struggling with safety and unpredictable costs. Families are fighting to access basic city services while roads crumble, property taxes rise, and the city announces yet another round of studies on issues that never seem to get solved. These are the challenges residents expect their municipal government to focus on.
So it is hard to understand how a photo-based public reporting system for parking violations became a priority. The Winnipeg Parking Authority now wants to explore a model where residents take pictures of each other’s vehicles, submit them online, and trigger a mailed ticket based solely on that image. Anyone filing a complaint would also have to sign an affidavit to verify the claim.
