PORTLAND, Ore. — Earlier this week, President Donald Trump unleased a tirade against Somalis, at one point calling them "garbage," amidst reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in Minnesota, specifically targeting that community.

"They contribute nothing. I don't want them in our country," Trump said near the end of a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, according to the Associated Press . "Their country is no good for a reason. Your country stinks, and we don't want them in our country."

The Somali-American community in Oregon pays attention to what's happening in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, home to tens of thousands of people of Somali descent. Although the population here is smaller, the impact of the negative rhetoric hits home, and has driven many to worry.
