BRIGHTON, Mich. —

Internet sensations can turn up just about anywhere and can happen to just about anyone.

One such sensation has led to a flood of donations for an 88-year-old veteran in Michigan. Advertisement

"It came out of the clear blue — I really truly mean that," Ed Bambas told local station WXYZ .

Ed Bambas works as a cashier at a Meijer store in Brighton, about 45 miles west of Detroit. The station reports Bambas had been retired for more than a decade before he returned to work to help pay his bills.

A video showing Bambas working has gone viral on TikTok, though Bambas told the station he actually hasn’t seen the social media platform.
