THE GABBA — There’s no watershed at the Gabba. There wouldn’t be a crowd left if there was.

“Another s**t ball Jofra,” shouts one fan. It’s about 3.30pm. “It’s a s**t ball!” He repeats, doubling down.

Really, it’s small fry. A couple of t-shirts are rocking around with the unofficial, but really, official slogan for the Northern Territory tourism board emblazoned on the back: “CU in the NT”, they read in massive bold letters on the back. The capital letters are big. “In the” is small. You can work it out.

Another row of blokes ready for a day on the beers are kitted out in t-shirts celebrating their hero Travis Head. “Head Always Gets Me Up,” those ones read.

Say what you want about the Aussies, but it’s their subtlety I’ve always respected.
