OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Y-12 has downgraded Building 9206 from a nuclear facility to a radiologically contaminated one, reducing risk and moving it closer to demolition.
Building 9206 closed in 1994 with uranium-bearing materials and contaminated equipment still inside.
The facility was built in 1944 and had several historical missions, including chemical recycling, charge preparation, uranium recovery and processing and work tied to the beta stage of the electromagnetic separation plant.
Removing nuclear materials from the building began the year it closed, with de-inventory and decontamination work happening occasionally until 2015. That year, the Transition Strategy program received funds to make a downgrade plan for future building transitions and clear things that needed processing befo
