MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. — A Monroe County grand jury indicted a man and woman on arson charges after state investigators said the two intentionally set fire to their Sweetwater home twice last year.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Melissa and Jared Whitfield intentionally set fire to their home in the 700 block of West Morris Street two different times in November 2024. The Sweetwater Fire Department called the TBI to investigate the fires.

On Dec. 3, 2025, a Monroe County grand jury returned indictments charging the homeowners with one count of arson, one count of aggravated arson and one count of tampering with evidence.

The two were arrested on Thursday and booked into the Monroe County Jail on $300,000 bonds.
