OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day in 2007, one of Omaha’s darkest days, a mass shooting at Westroads Mall.

It was just after lunch on a Wednesday when a 19-year-old dressed in camouflage and armed with a rifle stormed into Von Maur, took the elevator to the third floor and started shooting.

He killed eight people , seriously injuring five more, before killing himself.

Several victims were on the top floor in gift wrapping. Christmas was just three weeks away.

The shooter had broken up with his girlfriend and been fired from his fast-food job.

The community came together to leave memorials and messages on the steps of Von Maur.

A month later, a fund for the victims’ families surpassed one million dollars.
