A man has been arrested following an incident which resulted in a road being closed and taped off by police for several hours. Northumbria Police responded to a report of criminal damage on Howdon Road in North Shields just before 8am this morning.

As officers attended a house in the area, a man is reported to have barricaded himself inside the property. The man, aged in his 40s, has now been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. He remains in police custody.
