Freddie Freeman, the Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman, participated in a lighthearted fundraising video for the Toronto SickKids Foundation. The video, produced by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, features Freeman being playfully teased by young patients from the SickKids patient ambassadors program.
In the annual Ugly Christmas Sweater video, Freeman enters a hospital room where he is met with playful jabs from the children. One child exclaims, "What a loser," while another responds, "Trust me man, we know who you are," when Freeman introduces himself. The banter continues with a child saying, "You really got some nerve coming here," and another quipping, "Go back to your sunshine and traffic, you hoser."
The video aims to support the SickKids Foundation, a significant fundraiser for the hospital during the holiday season. This year marks the seventh installment of Reynolds' festive video series, which has become a staple in the charity's fundraising efforts. A group of SickKids ambassadors and a nurse traveled to Los Angeles to film the segment with Freeman and Reynolds' production company, Maximum Effort.
Despite the playful ribbing, families present praised Freeman for his generosity and the positive impact he had on the young fans. Freeman, who has dual citizenship and has represented Canada in the World Baseball Classic, remains a favorite among Canadian baseball enthusiasts.
Before the World Series, Freeman acknowledged the mixed feelings Canadian fans might have towards him, saying, "I’m not so sure the Canadian fans, Blue Jays fans, will be cheering for me this time around like it was in the WBC the last couple times." He expressed his connection to Canada, noting, "Both my parents are born and raised in Canada. My mom from the Toronto area, dad from Windsor, so it is special."
Freeman shared a personal anecdote about his visits to Toronto, recalling, "Every time I go there, you just have this feeling inside that you feel just a little bit closer to my mom. Every time I go there I always get this little envelope in my locker and it’s always like pictures of a third cousin that has found photos in their garage and they bring them to me. I love going back to Toronto."
The video not only entertains but also aims to inspire donations for the SickKids Foundation. Freeman concluded his appearance by complimenting the kids, saying, "By the way, I love what you guys are doing here," which prompted a spirited chant of "Let’s Go Blue Jays!" One child humorously added, "Do you even lift, ‘bro?" showcasing the fun atmosphere of the event. Freeman's participation highlights his commitment to supporting charitable causes while engaging with fans, even those who may root for rival teams.
