DALLAS — Some important dates are fast approaching for the new school voucher program in Texas, a program that allows parents to use public funds for private school tuition.

The first is December 9, when private schools can begin registering to participate in the program.

There are an estimated 1,700 to 2,000 private schools in Texas and acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock thinks more than half of them will join.

“There’s no reason not to participate in it because we’re not telling you how to operate your school. We’re not telling you what to teach. And so, there’s all the incentive available to register,” Hancock told us on Inside Texas Politics. “And I think we’ll have a very large number, much more than half, registered with the state.”
