(WPTA) - As 21Country continues to settle into winter, its waterways have begun to freeze over.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding Hoosiers to stay safe on the ice.
Here are tips from Indiana Conservation Officers on how to properly enjoy activities on the frozen waterways:
Assume no ice is safe until proven otherwise.
Don’t go on ice without knowing its thickness.
Test the thickness of ice using an ice auger.
At least 4″ is recommended for walking and other foot activities, while at least 5″ is recommended for any use of snowmobiles/ATVs.
Don’t test the thickness of the ice while alone.
Wear a life jacket or flotation device.
Carry ice picks and rope gear.
Inform someone of your location before going onto ice.
Monitor others on the ice, watching for
