The Pirates claimed former top prospect Marco Luciano off waivers from the Giants on Friday.

Luciano, a 24-year-old who played second base and shortstop for San Francisco, was the No. 13 prospect in baseball ahead of the 2022 season, per MLB Pipeline, and ranked as high as No. 39 before the 2024 season.

Luciano, who was signed out of the Dominican Republic for $2.6 million in 2018, was seen as the Giants’ shortstop of the future following Brandon Crawford. After playing just six games in Triple-A, Luciano made his major league debut in 2023 as a 21-year-old. He batted .231 with three doubles in 21 games in 2023, then batted .211 with five doubles and a triple in 27 games in 2024. He did not appear for the big-league Giants in 2025.
