Ward said he was shocked to learn on Thursday about the death of Bellamy at MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield.

He says he visited with Bellamy the night before to talk about accusations that the inmate had attacked a correction officer at Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers.

“He appeared withdrawn. He appeared, you know, saddened,” Ward said.

Bellamy, 27, had been serving a 20-year sentence for first-degree sexual assault.

The correction officers' union says Bellamy also tried to sexually assault the guard.
