Friday's WVSSAC Class AAAA state football championship game at a chilly University of Charleston at Laidley Field resulted in long-awaited exhilaration for Morgantown and unimaginable heartbreak for Martinsburg.
The Bulldogs cut a 28-7 second half deficit to 28-21 and had a chance to potentially tie the Mohigans in the final seconds.
Facing a fourth-and-goal at the 7-yard line in the final 10 seconds with the clock running and no timeouts, Martinsburg's quarterback spiked the football with one second left, resulting in a turnover on downs.
Afterward, Bulldogs coach Dave Walker said Martinsburg had a play called and the ill-fated clock stoppage was the result of a miscommunication.
That gave Morgantown (13-1) its seventh state title first since 2005, when the Mohigans prevailed 27-24 ov
