ROSEPINE, La. (KPLC) - Fifth-graders at Rosepine Elementary wrapped up weeks of lessons through the DARE program. The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office celebrated their hard work and reinforced the message of making safe, responsible choices.

The DARE program of today looks different than what many parents may remember.

In Vernon Parish, deputies with the sheriff’s office are teaching students how to handle real-world pressures — not just drugs, but friendships, social media, and everyday choices.

“It started out as ‘just say no’ back in the 80’s, and now it is all about good decision making and everything that you do. All the words that you say, all the actions, anything that you do,” said Malissa Sweeney, sheriff’s deputy.
