A former Burlington High School wrestling coach was found guilty on Wednesday by a federal jury of attempting to send sexually explicit messages to a minor on social media, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

Stephen James Lemelin, 51, was convicted on three counts of attempted transfer of obscene material to a minor after a three-day trial, according to a statement from the office of Leah B. Foley, US attorney for Massachusetts.

Lemelin was arrested in May 2024 and indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2024, the statement said.

Over the course of five months, Lemelin sent sexually explicit messages and obscene material through Kik Messenger to an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old girl, prosecutors said.
