BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A Former State Forester and Bangor City Council member has died.

According to his obituary, John Cashwell died Sunday night in his home.

Cashwell was appointed as Director of the Maine Forest Service in 1987.

He left the department in 1992.

Before becoming State Forester, Cashwell would serve as a city councilor and Mayor of Calais in the 1980’s.

Between 2003 and 2006, Cashwell would serve on the Bangor City Council.

During his last year on the council, he would serve as the council chair.

Cashwell was 78 years old.
