Kent McCollum got a call last Sunday from the Olathe Police Department, telling him his mother had been brutally attacked by a man with a hammer in the parking lot of a Whole Foods store in Olathe, Kansas. Advertisement

"When I got to the hospital, as soon as I walked into the emergency room, a detective from the Olathe police was there to greet me and let me know what had happened and just give me a heads up, you know, before I walked in and saw her, which is, as you can imagine, was devastating to see somebody that was that brutally attacked and the way they looked," he said. "I was immediately shocked, and I turned around and basically collapsed on the floor until I could gain some composure."
