Kylen Johonson tied it, Mac Long won it, and Rush Propst walked out of Protective Stadium with his sixth AHSAA state championship as Coosa Christian won its first title.
The Conquerors did it with a clutch fourth-quarter rally that included losing their best player to injury in Friday’s 29-22 victory over Lanett (12-3). Coosa scored two touchdowns in the final 3:20.
“Things looked a little bleak, and Mac Long picked it up,” Propst said.
Lanett’s Nadarious Morgan scored on a 67-yard run to give the Panthers a 22-14 lead with 5:30 to go, just moments after Lanett missed a go-ahead field goal attempt.
But the Conquerors didn’t panic.
“We are hard-nosed and tough and we’re not going to give up,” senior lineman Zayden Franklin said.
Added Long, “I knew we could come back.”
