KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Ijams Nature Center is planning improvements to make its trails more accessible next year.
Thanks to a $20,000 multiyear grant from the REI Cooperative Action Fund, Ijams will be purchasing two adaptive wheelchairs and making improvements to several trails to ensure they can accommodate those wheelchairs.
“Ijams will manage a lending program at its Visitor Center so that guests in need of mobility assistance can check out adaptive wheelchairs,” the center said in a social media post on Friday.
Ijams said Legacy Parks owns two additional chairs that will be added to the program at Ijams, meaning two adult wheelchairs and one child wheelchair will be available for use free of charge. An additional adult chair will be added next year.
