STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Today, Holy Rosary R.C. Church on Jerome Avenue is a vibrant parish in the heart of South Beach.

But before it opened its doors, the parish was located on Sand Lane, just blocks from the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Boardwalk.

History

The cornerstone for the original wood-framed Holy Rosary R.C. Church, located at 207 Sand Lane, bore a 1914 date; it initially served as a mission chapel of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Rosebank.

By 1927, the South Beach community was ready to form a parish of its own.

The Archdiocese of New York chose the name “Holy Rosary” for the new parish, reflecting the predominantly Italian community’s devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, the church’s website says.
