VIRGINIA, USA — As temperatures drop and holiday costs climb, nonprofits across Hampton Roads say December has quickly become one of their most challenging months. Organizations that support families, seniors, and the unhoused are seeing a surge in people seeking food, shelter, and necessities, many for the first time.
This year, leaders say the need is sharper and more specific.
Winter clothing at the top of the list
At the Salvation Army’s Hampton Roads Area Command, the highest-demand items are winter clothing and durable footwear. Area Commander Chris Flanagan says the reality of what people need doesn’t always match what’s donated.
“We always need blankets. We need gloves,” he said. “We’re in the middle of a shoe drive too for the men and women in our shelters.”
