A two-year-old boy has died following a horrific attack by a pit bull at his home in Zante, Greece. The incident occurred shortly after the child returned from shopping with his parents. It is reported that the boy managed to escape their attention and entered an area of the property where the dog was chained.
The attack took place when the pit bull bit the child in the face and head. Emergency services rushed him to the General Hospital of Zakynthos, but despite medical efforts, he could not be saved. The boy's mother is currently receiving treatment for shock as a result of the tragic event.
Local media have reported that the child's parents have been arrested and charged with manslaughter. The dog, described as a stray, had been taken in by the family approximately two months prior. Neighbours noted that the couple were known for their love of animals and had been caring for the dog, which was kept in their garden.
Witnesses to the attack stated that the parents fought desperately with the dog as it clamped down on their son. Michalis Giannakos, head of the national public hospital workers’ union, confirmed that the dog had been a stray that the family chose to shelter. He added that the mother remains too distraught to speak about the incident, while the father is cooperating with police as part of standard procedures. The exact location of the attack—whether it occurred outside or inside the house—remains unclear.
