An elderly man has died after being airlifted to hospital following a serious collision near a Scots island airport. ‌

The crash happened around 12.15pm on Friday, December 5, on the B9070 Backaskaill road near Sanday Airport in Orkney and involved a grey Volvo V70 estate car and a grey Jeep Renegade Sport M-Jet estate car. ‌

Emergency services attended and a 87-year-old Volvo driver was rushed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by air ambulance but sadly died a few hours later. The Jeep driver was uninjured. ‌

The road was closed for investigation but reopened around 4.50pm on Saturday, 6 December.
