Motherwell’s skyline changed forever in a matter of seconds today as three landmark tower blocks were demolished in a simultaneous controlled explosion. ‌

The 20-storey Allan, Coursington and Draffen Towers were brought down just after midday to clear the way for future developments , marking the end of an era for thousands of former residents. ‌

The button triggering the blast was pressed by 91-year-old Danny Devine, a former caretaker who worked in the blocks for 25 years – and brother of the late singer Sydney Devine. ‌

Danny had written to the council asking if he could witness the demolition and was invited to carry out the honour. He was joined by nine-year-old Joseph Carroll from Cathedral Primary, who has been documenting the process for a school project.
