A 26-year-old Hillcrest man was arrested after threatening a cab driver with a handgun while picking up a fare on Saturday, Dec. 6, police in Ramapo said.
During a verbal dispute, the suspect lifted his shirt to display a handgun, then removed the weapon and racked the slide, chambering a round, while the fare was waiting with a young child nearby on Rockland Lane, police said.
Detectives identified the suspect through a photo array, responded to his house with patrol officers, and took him into custody, police said. Officers recovered an unserialized ghost gun and an ammunition feeding device, according to police.
The man, whose name was not released, was charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors, including Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Menacing, according to police. He was arraigned Sunday morning, and bail was set at $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.
"This was a dangerous situation that could have resulted in tragedy," police said. "Thanks to the victim’s quick report and the coordinated response by our patrol officers and detectives, the firearm was recovered and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. Ramapo Police remain committed to protecting our community and holding violent offenders accountable."
