MANCHESTER, N.H. —

Officials are investigating the cause of a house fire in Milton on Saturday morning that left one person dead.

The fire, at 285 Willey Road, was reported around 8:45 a.m.

"My fiancé was outside, and he was like, 'Hey, there's a bunch of black smoke coming up through the trees,'" said Brianna St. Pierre of Milton.

Neighbors said they knew something was wrong when they saw and heard crews responding.

"It was really sad, especially hearing that, like, unfortunately, not only did he lose his house, but he also lost his loved one," St. Pierre said.

Fire officials said that when they arrived, they were met with a quarter-mile driveway still covered in snow. Cars and equipment along the driveway also made it difficult to get the firetruck to the home.
