HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Sunday marked 84 years since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and airfields across Oahu that thrust the U.S. into World War II.
A remembrance ceremony was held Sunday morning at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial to honor the more than 2,400 Americans who lost their lives that day.
It’s the first time survivors of the surprise attack were present at the annual ceremony.
Only 12 survivors are known to be living, and they are all over 100 years old.

“You have carried the torch for so long, and now it is up to us not only to receive it and to ensure that its light never fades,” said Tom Leatherman, superintendent of the Pearl Harbor Memorial. “
