The northern lights are expected to appear over the entirety of Michigan Monday night, Dec. 8, according to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) forecast, but cloudy skies and snow will make viewing a challenge, the National Weather Service says.
The view line on SWPC's dashboard map shows people in up to 17 states could see the northern lights, or aurora borealis, Monday night. In Michigan, the glowing lights could be visible in the night skies over the entire state.
However, local NWS offices forecast cloudy skies and snow over much of the state Monday night, except for areas of partly cloudy skies in southern Michigan, likely hampering any aurora visibility. Best viewing occurs in a dark, open area under clear skies, experts advise.
