CHARLESTON, W.Va. — West Virginia National Guard officials said Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, who was critically wounded in a terrorist attack near the White House just before Thanksgiving, is showing significant improvement as he continues to receive intensive medical care.

Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, adjutant general of the West Virginia National Guard, appeared in recent a video update alongside Wolfe’s mother, Melody Wolfe. Seward said the family is “optimistic and excited” about the progress the airman has made in recent days.

Wolfe’s mother described noticeable signs of responsiveness as sedation and pain medications have been reduced. She said her son has become more alert and physically active.
