More than 5,500 people have signed an online petition urging the UK Government to replace the BBC TV licence fee with either advertising or a paywall ahead of the annual price rise in April. The fee currently costs £174.50 and must be paid by households who watch or record any live TV, or risk facing a potential fine. ‌

However, this payment typically rises in-line with the September Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate, which was 3.8 per cent. Such an uprating would see the licence fee increase by £6.65 to £181.15 for the 2026/27 financial year. ‌

It’s important to be aware this isn’t set in stone and will be confirmed by the UK Government before the start of the new financial year in April. ‌
