Bill Oram’s column on Portland State University’s football “turning point” doesn’t reflect the university I came to know as a post-baccalaureate student from 2013 to 2020, (“ Portland State football at a ‘turning point’ after Bruce Barnum’s firing | Bill Oram, ” Nov. 26).
PSU is not a smaller version of the University of Oregon or Oregon State University. It is mainly a commuter school serving older, working, nontraditional students who do not have the time or inclination to build their lives around a football program. There is no deep athletic tradition, no tailgating culture, no multigenerational loyalty and no campus climate in which school spirit can be manufactured by decree.
Meanwhile, PSU faces rising tuition , falling enrollment and anxiety among faculty and staff. Adjun
