Fellow Democratic leaders selected Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for a key party leadership post heading into the 2026 midterm elections, when control of dozens of gubernatorial offices are up for grabs.
At an annual meeting in Phoenix Nov. 6, Democratic governors unanimously tapped Whitmer to serve as vice chair of the Democratic Governors Association, according to a press release from Whitmer's Fight Like Hell PAC, which raised millions in the 2024 election cycle and supported a slew of Democratic candidates. In her role as DGA vice chair, Whitmer will serve as a key fundraiser, adviser and messenger for Democratic candidates for governor, according to the release. Whitmer cannot run again for Michigan governor due to term limits.
