Hugh O’Neill led Irish lords in a campaign against English forces, but eventually fled Ireland in the exodus known as the Flight of the Earls in 1607.
The O’Neill dynasty, perhaps one of the greatest of the Irish clans, ruled for more than 300 years from the very hilltop known as the Hill of the O’Neill.
From the 14th century onwards, the hill was the seat of military and political power of the O’Neill clan, chosen because of its height advantage and panoramic views.
The proposed works, according to the relevant development committee agenda item circulated some time ago, also include the development of an open park at the Hill of the O’Neill site, with new, softer access, and a fully-accessible play area.
