A major airport has been forced to shut down following a clash between police and protesters on its runway, with several flights now set to face disruption.

The runway at Heraklion International Airport has been flooded by farmers and livestock breeders arriving from Crete in Greece . The airport has suspended its operations until further notice after the group clashed with police while protesting over the delayed payment of European Union subsidies. Protesters have been pictured hurling stones amid tear gas while standing on a wall surrounding the building. In another image, a row of tractors were seen being used to block access to the main road leading up to the airport.
