A large earthquake was recorded off the coast of Japan, followed by tsunami warnings for much of the north-east coast of the country. Large areas of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures are all warned of 3m waves.
Some other areas of the prefectures are under warnings for 1m waves. The temperature in the North is currently at 0°C.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said it occurred at 11:15 p.m. off Aomori at a depth of 50 kilometres. The magnitude was revised from the initially reported 7.2.
The quake was logged an upper 6 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in parts of Aomori. The quake was reportedly felt in central Tokyo.
Warnings to evacuate to higher ground have been issued across Japanese news channels and emergency alerts. 16:49 Olivia Sheed
