A powerful earthquake registering 7.6 on the Richter scale has hit off Japan's north-eastern coastline. The tremor, which occurred on Monday evening local time (December 8), has sparked tsunami warnings for the Aomori region. ‌

Eyewitness accounts describe how 'everything was wobbling' as the seismic activity reverberated throughout Honshu, Japan's main island. Authorities are now advising locals to head for higher ground immediately, the Daily Star reports . ‌

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that tsunami waves reaching up to three metres in height could strike the north-eastern shoreline. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred at 11.15pm local time. ‌
