GRAND FORKS — Donald Joseph "D.J." Bartlette will serve 10 years for recklessly causing the death of Anthony "Tony" James Kiehl during an altercation last year in Grand Forks.
Bartlette, 46, was found guilty in August of Class B felony manslaughter after a trial by jury. He was originally charged with Class AA felony murder, but jurors were given four possible verdicts: not guilty, or guilty of either murder, manslaughter or Class C felony negligent homicide.
Dr. Kevin Whaley testified during the trial that Kiehl died shortly after he was punched in the jaw, a blow that caused his jaw to fracture and head to spin, which tore blood vessels and made his brain strike his skull. It's rare for a jaw fracture to cause someone's death, Whaley testified, but he believed Kiehl's other injurie
