As additional Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents descend on the Twin Cities last week, reports are piling up of residents being physically threatened and wrongfully detained.
An effort known as "Operation Metro Surge" began in early December, amidst an ongoing targeting of Somali Minnesotans by President Donald Trump, who described the community as "garbage" and vowed to send “back to where they came from.”
The Trump administration said more than 100 federal agents would be deployed to the Twin Cities for the operation, ICE has touted its arrest of 17 undocumented people with criminal records as a result of the operation, including six men from Somalia.
Spokespeople for ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not respond to requests for comment on Monday.
