Earlier this year, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that bans sweepstakes casinos in the Golden State beginning on January 1, 2026. Since the bill was passed, many of the best sweepstakes casinos have announced plans to exit the state, including several that are ceasing operations before the ban goes into effect.

The California legislature overwhelmingly supported bill AB831 banning sweepstakes casinos in the state. The bill did not receive a single no vote throughout the legislative process.
The bill passed unanimously through the Senate Committees on Governmental Organization (15-0), Public Safety (6-0) and Appropriations (7-0) over the summer. It
