PHOENIX — The head varsity football coach who was part of an off-campus trip that resulted in the drowning death of a Cesar Chavez high school student has had his teaching certification suspended.

On Dec. 8, the Arizona Board of Education voted to approve a settlement agreement reached with William Chipley, Cesar Chavez High School's former head football coach.

Chipley was one of the coaches involved in a 2023 trip to a football camp at Pinetop-Lakeside that resulted in the death of 15-year-old Christopher Hampton at Show Low Lake.

The coaches took the students to the lake "without prior authorization or permission from District or School administration," according to the education board, and allowed the students to swim despite a "No Swimming" sign.
