ROCHESTER, Minn.- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says anglers should wait for ice to get to 4 inches or thicker before getting out on the water this winter.

Annette Schlag, a conservation officer, says for snow mobiles, ice enthusiasts should wait until its around 5 to 7 inches.

For larger vehicles she says drivers should consult the DNR's chart on what level of thickness is appropriate.

Schlag says its also important to pay attention to the conditions around the ice as well, if it looks clear, its probably safe but if it has a honeycomb appearance it is probably weaker than it looks.

If lake ice is covered in snow she says it also may be insulated from the cold and not as solid as it could be.
