An elderly man, Lazalo Magowe, believed to be in his 70s, has been killed by a crocodile while swimming in Lake Malawi at Vinthenga Village in Nkhotakota District on 6 December 2025.

According to Nkhotakota Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Chisomo Chuma, Magowe entered the water during a heatwave and was dragged underwater. His body was recovered the following morning by local fishermen.

A postmortem conducted by medical personnel from Nkhotakota District Hospital confirmed the cause of death as hypovolaemic shock secondary to a crocodile attack.

Magowe came from Mpheruwa Village under Traditional Authority Changata in Thyolo District.
