Former Celtic striker John 'Dixie' Deans has passed away at the age of 79.

The prolific forward, signed by legendary manager Jock Stein in 1971, enjoyed a largely successful spell at the club, making 184 appearances in all competitions, following his move from fellow Scottish side Motherwell.

During that time, he scored 124 goals, winning every major honour in Scotland across his five-year spell with the club.

Born in Johnston, he started his career at Neilston Juniors before going on trial at Albion Rovers in 1965, joining Motherwell that same year.

In 152 league appearances for the North Lanarkshire side, he scored 78 times, prompting Stein to sign him for £17,500 back in 1971.
